General Information

Overview

This unit facilitates the development of the knowledge and skills required for the safe administration of medications, including evaluation of therapeutic effects and/or adverse reactions post administration and relevant nursing and patient education considerations. You will critically examine the role of the nurse in the preparation and administration of medicines and other therapeutic substances. You will examine the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of common medications and polypharmacy considerations. In addition, you will apply legal, ethical and best practice principles in the safe administration of medication and other therapeutic substances (e.g. oxygen, blood and blood products) including proper use of related devices. You will also engage in electronic medication management systems, and address patient education and engagement in medication management.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Must be enrolled in CL91 Bachelor of Nursing or CG41 Start Uni Now.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
