Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from Discussions with students as clinical site visits and via email.

Feedback

Student feedback was that the Continuity of Care (CoCE) reflective portfolio assessment was too repetitive with 4 antenatal entries, 1 for birth and a minimum of 2 for postnatal care for each of the ten CoCE experiences they were undertaking. They stated the number of topics to write about was overwhelming.

Recommendation

The structure of the assessment is to be reviewed by the midwifery team to take into account student feedback on the repetitive nature of the entries in the Continuity of Care reflective portfolio assessment. This will take into consideration the learning outcomes for the unit and assessment.

Feedback from Email communication with students whose reflective portfolios did not meet the unit requirements.

Feedback

Students were unaware that it was a unit requirement to complete 3 x Continuity of Care Experiences, recruit a further 3 and submit their reflective portfolio for these experiences by the end of term 2.

Recommendation

This information was shared with students during the term 2 residential school and on the Moodle page for Midwifery Practice 2. It will be reviewed to ensure clarity and accessibility for all students. Assessment requirements will be provided in multiple formats, including during clinical site visits, to ensure students are fully aware of the unit expectations.

Learning Outcomes Assessed
Critically reflect on clinical learning and midwifery practice related to the care of the woman and her baby experiencing complex factors during the childbearing continuum.

Aim
The aim of this assessment is for you to analyse current evidence that guides maternity healthcare care for women experiencing conditions complicating pregnancy including your understanding of the disease, treatment and multidisciplinary care of women and infants experiencing complexities. This assessment will provide you with an opportunity to disseminate your findings.

Instructions
There are three parts to this assessment task. Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:

Part One – Individual Written Assessment

For your individual written assessment, choose one of the following complex midwifery practice topics below:

·       Intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnancy

·       Syphilis in pregnancy

·       Obesity in pregnancy

·       Urinary tract infections and chronic kidney disease

·       Cytomegalovirus

·       Epilepsy in pregnancy

·       Group B Streptococcus

Use the following steps as a guide to your written assessment:

1.    Explain the pathophysiology of the chosen condition. Identify the associated consultation and referral level according to the Australian College of Midwives’ National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral – 4th edition (2021) (approx. 550 words).

2.    Assess the current, evidence-based care for women who are diagnosed with the chosen condition and dicuss suitable multidisciplinary team care plan. This plan should demonstrate an understanding of multidisciplinary collaboration and appropriate referral pathways (approx. 550 words).

3.    Evaluate how the midwife would work with the woman to promote woman-centred care and optimise her experience of pregnancy, labour/birth and the postnatal period (approx. 400 words).

Part Two – Group Poster Design

Students will be required to work in groups to design a poster on one of the topics above related to complications in pregnancy. The target audience will be your student peers. The unit coordinator will assign students to groups of 2-3 and provide a specific topic from the list above. The allocation will be published on the Midwifery Practice 2 Moodle discussion board and Assessment 1 Moodle page.

Please follow the instructions below to design your poster:

1.    Define the chosen pregnancy complication.

2.    Outline the potential consequences/ outcomes of the pregnancy complication.

3.    Explore the evidence-based recommendations and multidisciplinary involvement required.

Part Three: Group Poster Presentation

Groups will be required to present their poster to their peers at a scheduled Zoom session on Wednesday 10th September at 10.00 am – 12.00 pm (AEST)

Please follow the instructions below to present the group poster:

Each group will have 10 minutes to explain their understanding of the chosen topic and the associated information presented on the poster: In your discussion, follow the same format as when designing your poster:

1.    Define the chosen pregnancy complication.

2.    Outline the potential consequences/ outcomes of the pregnancy complication.

3.    Explore the evidence-based recommendations and multidisciplinary involvement required.

Unit Coordinator:  Kelly Haynes

Learning Outcomes Assessed
1.    Assess, plan, provide, and evaluate physiological care of the woman and her baby experiencing complex factors using the latest Australian College of Midwives (ACM) National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral and digital health and emerging technologies.

2.    Assess, plan, provide, and evaluate psychosocial care of the woman experiencing complex factors during the childbearing continuum using the latest Australian College of Midwives (ACM) National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral and digital health and emerging technologies.

3.    Critically reflect on clinical learning and midwifery practice related to the care of the woman and her baby experiencing complex factors during the childbearing continuum.

Aim
The aim of this assessment is for you to demonstrate reflective practice. Reflective practice is a key element that contributes to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s Midwife Standards for Practice (2018). Through reflective processes, students and registered midwives can identify and explore diverse values, beliefs, learning needs, and sociocultural structures.

Instructions
Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:

1.    Submit a separate reflective journal for each of the six (6) 'Continuity of Care Experience' (CoCE) women recruited across term 1 and term 2.

2.    For the three (3) CoCE women recruited during term 1 you must complete each portfolio by submitting:

a.    One reflective journal entry on your intrapartum experience for each woman (if attended), and

b.    One reflective journal entry on your postnatal care experience for each woman (reflecting on a minimum of two episodes of care on separate days).
(Each entry should be approximately 600 words).

3.    For the three (3) CoCE women recruited in Term 2, submit:

a.    One reflective journal entry per woman on the antenatal care you provided (you are expected to attend and reflect on four episodes of antenatal care in total but must have completed at least two by the end of term 2).

(Each entry should be approximately 600 words).

A reflective journal is a critical and analytical way of thinking about your clinical experience. It involves looking at a situation, assessing what you have learned from it, what you could have done differently, realising new approaches to your care, and ultimately, how you felt about the whole experience. As a student midwife, a reflective journal shows how different aspects of your work interconnect and can be very useful for identifying gaps in knowledge and ethical dilemmas or situations that need further thought. Reflective writing is more personal than other kinds of academic writing and is an exploration of events, not just a description of them.

Please use the framework below to structure each reflective journal entry:

·       Description (50 words) – What is it? What happened? Why am I talking about it?

·       Interpretation (450 words) – What is important and relevant? Look through your description and find words or phrases that require further exploration. Include the rationale for what was done or why it was done. Can you critically analyse the care provided or where there is controversy about what was done or found? Provide the rationale and sources of evidence for both sides of the argument. How can it be explored and explained using contemporary theories?

·       Outcome (100 words) – What have I learned from this? How will it influence my future work?

Please note that you must use the template provided on the MDWF12006 Moodle page.

Literature and references
In this assessment, use at least 3 contemporary (<10 years) references per journal entry to support your discussion. You may also use seminal scholarly literature where relevant. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles as well as textbooks and credible websites. When sourcing information, consider the 5 elements of a quality reference: currency, authority, relevance, objectivity, and coverage. Grey literature sourced from the internet must be from reputable websites such as from government, university, or peak national bodies: for example, the Australian College of Midwives or the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Note, that websites such as StatPearls, Life in the Fastlane, and Wikipedia are not suitable for this assessment task. Lecture notes are not primary sources of evidence and should not be used in this assessment. All resources, other than web pages and grey literature, must be sources from the CQUniversity library.

Requirements
·       Each CoCE woman must have their own individual journal in Word Document format, which are to be uploaded as individual files to the relevant Moodle assessment page.

·       CoCE women and health professionals must be de-identified within the journal.

·       Each journal entry in the portfolio must adhere to the template provided on the MDWF12006 Moodle page

·       Use a conventional and legible size 12 font, such as Times New Roman.

·       An introduction and conclusion are not required for this assessment.

·       All sections of the portfolio included in the instructions must be attempted and clearly answered to pass this assessment task.

·       You may write in the first-person perspective for your reflection, however, write in the third-person perspective when referring to the literature.

·       Use formal academic, discipline specific, professional and inclusive language.

·       Use Microsoft Word English (Australia) spelling and grammar checker.

·       Paraphrase, summarise or quote information acknowledging the original source (referencing) to avoid plagiarism.

·       Bullet points, tables, appendices and additional headings, aside from those provided, are not to be used in this assessment.

·       Follow academic writing conventions: spell out contractions in full; introduce abbreviations and acronyms; spell out numbers for zero through nine and use numerals for numbers 10 and above.

·       All work submitted must be your own work.

·       Provide your reference list at the end of your reflective portfolio template on a separate page.

·       Use the seventh edition American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style. The CQUniversity Academic Learning Centre has an online CQU APA Referencing Style Guide.

·       The word count is considered from the first word of your journal entry to the last word including the description, interpretation and outcome. The word count excludes the reference list and hours calculations but includes in-text references and direct quotations.

Resources
·       You can use unit provided materials and other credible sources (e.g. journal articles, books) to reference your argument. The quality and credibility of your sources are important. Please note, lecture notes are not peer reviewed primary sources of evidence.

·       We recommend that you access your discipline specific library guide: the Nursing and Midwifery Guide; Social Work and Community Services Guide.

·       We recommend you use EndNote to manage your citations and reference list. More information on how to use EndNote is available at the CQUniversity Library website.

·       For information on academic communication please go to the Academic Learning Centre Moodle site. The Academic Communication section has many helpful resources including information for students with English as a second language.

·       You may wish to submit a draft to Studiosity.

·       Submit at least one draft before the due date to review your Turnitin Similarity Score before making a final submission. Instructions are available here. Please remember, the similarity score is only a matching tool, and the score alone does not necessarily indicate or eliminate the presence of plagiarism.

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
