Learning outcomes assessed
1. Identify the types of evidence that inform current safe, quality midwifery practice.
2. Critically analyse current evidence for translation into midwifery practice.
Aim
The aim of this assessment task is for you to develop essential research skills by conducting a structured review of the literature on a case study in midwifery. You will systematically search academic literature, critically assess the relevance and quality of sources, and document your search process, including databases used, search terms applied, and inclusion/exclusion criteria. Your final review will require you to synthesise key findings from selected sources, and articulate findings in a clear and structured manner.
Instructions
Please follow the steps below to complete this assessment task.
Use the case study below to complete the assessment task.
Case Study
Vanessa is a 27-year-old, G1P0 who is 5 weeks gestation. She has no medical conditions and is generally healthy. You are the midwife working at the local general practitioner’s office. Vanessa has expressed that there are many pregnancy vitamin products available at the pharmacy. She is unsure if she needs to take a pregnancy multivitamin, and what other supplements are recommended.
Please complete the following in relation to the chosen case study:
1. Provide an introduction that outlines the topic and provides essential background information to ensure the reader has a clear understanding of the subject being examined.
2. Use a research question framework to formulate a research question based on your chosen case study.
3. Undertake a search of the literature according to the processes demonstrated in the unit content. Describe the search strategy used. Include the following:
-
- The date the search was undertaken
- Databases searched
- Keywords used and Boolean operators
- Inclusion and exclusion criteria
- Publication year range
- State the screening and selection process, and visually represent the process using a flowchart
4. Use the attached table to present the selected sources (maximum 10) and their characteristics.
5. Select an appropriate tool from the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) or use the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (for mixed-methods research) to undertake a quality appraisal of each source. Attach a copy of each appraisal to your submission.
6. Synthesise the relevant findings of the included sources and discuss the implications of your findings with relevance to the case study.
7. Provide a brief conclusion which summarises the main findings.

2. Critically analyse current evidence for translation into midwifery practice
3. Evaluate the relevance of current research to inform ethical decision making in midwifery practice.
4. Analyse and critique current policy relevant to midwifery practice.
Aim
The aim of this assessment is for you to develop your ability to critically engage with contemporary midwifery practice. You will select a specific area of practice and use current evidence to discuss how the area of midwifery practice is currently implemented. Based on your evaluation, you will make a recommendation on whether a change to this practice is needed. You will then justify your recommendation—whether to maintain or modify the practice—by drawing on contemporary scholarly literature, helping you strengthen your skills in evidence-informed decision-making.
Instructions
You will write a research report on a chosen aspect of midwifery practice, examining current policies or clinical observations. Through a literature review, you will evaluate whether the existing practice should change based on the latest evidence. Your final recommendation must be supported by research findings.
Please choose one of the following topics:
- Strategies for the prevention of severe perineal trauma (third- and fourth-degree tears/obstetric anal sphincter injuries) during birth
- Vaginal birth after two caesarean sections
- Routine administration of intravenous antibiotics in labour for women considered positive for Group B Streptococcus.
- Membrane sweeping for induction of labour.
Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:
1. Provide an introduction which establishes the background to the topic and outlines the direction of the paper.
2. Discuss the current midwifery practice, using evidence to support your discussion.
3. Make a recommendation on whether a change to current practice should occur.
4. Justify the recommendation for the change using contemporary scholarly literature. If you are not recommending change, use contemporary literature to justify this.
5. Provide a conclusion which summarises the main arguments.

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
