Overview
On successful completion of this unit, you will have a sound understanding of the fundamentals of microbiology. You will be able to explain the principles by which microbes are classified, the relationship between form and function, the mechanisms by which genetic change occurs and the dynamics of growth and multiplication. Mixed mode and Rockhampton students must attend a compulsory residential school or on-campus laboratory classes in order to achieve the learning outcomes.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from SUTE data and comments
Students generally loved the residential school, stating it helped contextualise their learning. A couple suggested a longer res school.
The residential schools will continue in their current format. It's unlikely that they will be lengthened due to logistics.
Feedback from SUTE data and comments
A couple of students would prefer being provided with detailed lecture notes.
The current lecture design intentionally uses concise slides containing key concepts and prompts, while detailed explanations are delivered verbally during lectures. This approach supports active engagement and reduces reliance on text-heavy slides. Students are able to revisit the material through lecture recordings and automatically generated transcripts. While no major changes are planned at this stage, opportunities to further support student learning through supplementary resources will continue to be evaluated.
