General Information

Overview

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) skills are essential for a variety of engineering professionals. In this unit, you will learn the fundamentals of engineering design and drawings using orthographic projection conventions and sectioning conventions complying with relevant engineering standards with the aid of appropriate software tools. You will develop skills in 3D solid modelling and rendering as well as producing detailed assembly drawings. As part of a team, you will design and construct 3D printed objects gaining an insight into all aspects of the design and rapid prototyping process.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Prerequisite: Aircraft Structural Maintenance Practices.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Assessment 1: Freehand Sketching

Task Description

You will create freehand sketches of several engineering objects, producing the required orthographic views (top view and relevant side view/s). You will complete these sketches without adding dimensions.

Task Description

You will complete a combined freehand and CAD drawing task. You will read and interpret a provided engineering assembly drawing, then extract the required part/s and produce accurate freehand and CAD drawings. You may be required to add dimensions, tolerances, and other annotation elements in line with engineering drawing standards.

You must demonstrate your understanding of assembly drawings, dimensioning practices, and tolerance application, using the appropriate CAD tools to create clear and accurate drawings.

Assessment Title
Assessment 3. CAD drawing of machine parts

Task Description

You will demonstrate your capability to interpret simple assembly drawings and extract the individual components needed to produce manufacturing‑ready part/detail drawings. You will identify required fits, tolerances, surface finish, and any other specifications relevant to accurate and cost‑effective manufacturing.

You will produce a complete and accurate CAD drawing of the assigned part(s), ensuring that all required views and dimensions are included. You will then transfer your CAD model to a 3D printing machine to produce a prototype and verify the dimensions you assigned in your drawing.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment 3 marking criteria:

  1. Neat and accurate CAD drawing complying with AS1100.
  2. Draw the part drawing with necessary views in a A4 drawing page, unwanted view/s may disadvantage the quality.
  3. Show all necessary dimensions (linear, angular) on the part drawing, repeat dimensions may serve as disadvantage.
  4. Determine suitable fits and tolerances and assign them, also surface roughness values as required. Unnecessary higher ranges of surface roughness, tolerances and fits increase production cost and these may undermine the quality of your work.
  5. Transfer your part drawing to a 3D printing machine as available and produce sample part. Investigate the dimensions you assigned.
