Overview
This unit focuses on the industry practices required to plan learning experiences, design and produce furnishing and furniture products. You will learn the industry practices and production processes of furnishing and cabinet making appropriate for teaching in secondary schools. You will design a product and at the practical workshop will implement the fundamental production skills to create a designed solution.

There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). 20% total marks Quizzes will be based on weekly readings from the assigned text book. Quizzes will be available on the Moodle website and will remain open until the end of Week 12. Students will be allowed a maximum of 1 hour and two attempts to complete each quiz. The highest scoring attempt will be used for grading. 2 Written Assessment
Hall Table
Students are required to draft a set of drawings, work procedures and lesson plans for the manufacture of a hall table for a Year 12 Furnishing class.
Task considerations:
- Rationale for the Project
- Year Level the Project is targeting and time frame (how many weeks will the project take to complete)
- An accurate Dimensioned Working Drawing of the Project
- A Detailed Work Procedure
- A Criteria Sheet.
The following joints need to be evidenced in the structure:
Dovetail, mortice, tenon and rebate. N.B. butt joints are not to be used.
Some turned elements from the lathe need to be included. They can be structural or decorative.
Hardware in the form of handles and runners can be manufactured or purchased based on the budget that would be allocated to this task.
Brief:
Produce a comprehensive set of working drawings for the proposed unit. Clearly identify where the specific joints have been applied.
How and where hardware is to be installed.
Specific unit requirements:

The unit requires a minimum of 2 drawers and 1 cupboard.

Materials: the structure can be manufactured from a composite of materials. i.e. timber, ply, metal or acrylic

3 Practical Assessment
Practical Assessment: Compulsory Residential School introduces students to learning experiences and projects which target Furnishing. Students will be using hand tools, machinery and equipment. Residential School gives students the opportunity to develop their hand skills, knowledge and understanding of workshop procedures and processes. Students will be assessed on the quality and presentation of their projects, in addition to their knowledge, understanding and application of workshop processes and their ability to work independently with limited assistance.

- Select and use tools and equipment to manufacture furniture and cabinet making products
- Adhere to workplace health and safety and maintenance practices when engaging in design and manufacturing activities.
