Term Specific Information

The unit coordinator (UC) for ECHO28009 is Tarryn Cremin. Tarryn is based on the Sydney campus, Monday to Thursday, and can be contacted via phone (02 9324 5034) or email (t.cremin@cqu.edu.au). The content in this unit is separated into four (4) modules.

Module 1 discusses best practice frameworks. We will explore the professional and personal complexities of a career in cardiac sonography, considering industry-aligned expectations, and evaluate ways to build resilience and nurture your professional identity.

Module 2 explores echocardiographic imaging. We will extend our imaging knowledge, and consider standard and non-standard techniques used to acquire diagnostic information in the clinical setting.

Module 3 focuses on clinical decision-making and reflective practice. We will explore how our consideration of clinical information, our professional interactions and our reflective practice informs our decisions as cardiac sonographers and allows us to interpret echocardiographic findings accurately. We will take theoretical and simulated knowledge and apply it to more 'real' scenarios.

Module 4 considers topical issues in the field of cardiac sonography. Exploration of, and reflection on, a selection of resources including journal articles will provide a future-forward view for you as you progress through your Echo studies towards graduation and accreditation and independent learning.

Tutorials have been scheduled throughout the term, for discussion of module content (details available on the Moodle site). Please contact the UC to request ad hoc Zoom meetings or suggest tutorial content at any time throughout the term.

Assessment Tasks

1 Online Quiz(zes)

Assessment Title
Online Quizzes

Task Description

Modules 1, 2 and 4 within the ECHO28009 unit will be linked to an online quiz assessment. All content presented in lectures and tutorials, and within prescribed readings, for these modules is assessable.

Quiz 1 will assess your understanding of the content presented in Module 1 (Frameworks for Best Practice).

Quiz 2 will assess your understanding of the content presented in Module 2 (Imaging in Practice).

Quiz 3 will assess your understanding of the content presented in Module 4 (Future Considerations in Echocardiography).

The below parameters apply to each of the three (3) quizzes:

  • The online quiz will include multiple choice and short answer style questions.
  • The online quiz will be open for 45 minutes.
  • Once started, the quiz cannot be paused or restarted.
  • Only one (1) attempt is permitted.
  • While resources (such as lecture notes and prescribed readings) may be referred to throughout the quiz, students should rely on their own understanding of content material to answer questions within the allocated time. Since student responses must demonstrate authentic consideration of professional dialogue, the use of auxiliary digital technologies such as genAI and grammar checking software is not permitted.
  • The quiz must be started at least 45 minutes prior to the closure time, to take advantage of the entire time allowance.
  • Any 'open' (not submitted) attempts will automatically be submitted at the time of test closure.
  • In the absence of an approved extension, students will receive a mark of zero (or fail) for this assessment, if it is not completed by the scheduled date and time.

Students are reminded that IT support from the university Information and Technology Division (TASAC) is only available during AEST business hours.

These online quiz assessments are to be undertaken as an individual. As with all other university examinations, colluding with other students on non-group work tasks is considered academic misconduct, and may lead to action being taken by the Deputy Dean of Learning and Teaching HMAS.

Students are advised to refer to the ‘Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework)’ document for additional university guidelines regarding assessments.

2 Reflective Practice Assignment

Assessment Title
Case Discussion and Reflection

Task Description

This Case Discussion and Reflection assessment aims to simulate the collaborative clinical learning environment and has been developed with consideration of the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition1, the Professional Competency Framework for Sonographers2 and best practice guidelines published by the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE)3.

This assessment task has three (3) components: the video presentation, peer feedback provision, and evaluation of feedback. These components will be performed in a stepwise fashion, through the Feedback Fruits platform (accessible through the Assessment tab on the unit Moodle page).

The video presentation

Following strategies discussed in lecture content and tutorials, and guided by exemplars, students will present a clinical case study to their peer audience. This video presentation will encompass discussion of pre-scan considerations (patient interactions and clinical investigations), DICOM imaging (including critique or commentary of assessment strategy) and post-scan matters (summary of findings and professional communication). Please see the below note on academic integrity and referencing, in relation to this video presentation.

Students attending clinical practicum should source this case study from their placement site, adhering to patient confidentiality protocols. Any students not attending clinical practicum must contact the unit coordinator, for supply of an appropriate case study for discussion.

Peer feedback provision

The Feedback Fruits platform will automatically assign students to review peer video presentations as they are uploaded. Students will be directed to provide feedback to two (2) peer members. Feedback should be constructive and respectful, simulating the collegial environment of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. Guidelines for giving and receiving feedback will be discussed in unit content and prompts will also appear in the Feedback Fruits platform. All peer feedback will be anonymous within the student cohort (but not to the unit coordinator).

Feedback evaluation

In the final component of this assessment task, students are required to critically reflect on peer feedback, evaluating its utility and identifying areas for professional development where appropriate. Reflection guidelines will be discussed in unit content.

Academic integrity guidelines must be adhered to within this assessment task, and this extends to referencing. The video presentation must demonstrate a written reference list. As per Vancouver referencing guidelines, any use of genAI must be referenced in-text (in this case, the use of genAI must be specifically stated in the audio narrative). Given the complexities of image interpretation, clinical decision-making and report writing, students are advised not to rely on large language models (LLMs), as outputs often lack specificity and accuracy when interpreting clinical case studies.

Students are advised to refer to the ‘Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework)’ document for additional university guidelines regarding assessments.
