General Information

Overview

This unit considers the practice and theory of modern photography. You will learn about historical and modern perspectives on photography as news, art and visual culture, as well as practical considerations such as composition, lighting and colour. You will be required to produce a portfolio, and must have access to either a digital camera or a 35 mm SLR camera and scanner. You will need access to software that can process digital images.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Prerequisite: Minimum of 36 credit points Students who have completed COMM12116 Contemporary Photomedia may not enrol in this unit.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback from Discussion with students and with DSD

Feedback

Course material made some mention of Adobe Lightroom CC, but this software was not available in class due to licensing issues.

Recommendation

Explain to students that Adobe Lightroom CC is not available in on-campus labs and will not be covered in the unit. Since all relevant Adobe Lightroom CC functionality can be found within Photoshop, this has no implications for learning.
