Overview
In this unit, you will explore cognitive and sensory impairments in and on the lives of the older person. You will apply the principles of advanced nursing knowledge, law, ethics, and professional attributes in the provision of best practice nursing care for the older person with cognitive and/or sensory impairment. You will apply and justify nursing clinical decision-making in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nurse-led and collaborative care that aims to maintain or enhance the cognitive and sensory capabilities of the older adult.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Assessments were really interesting, I never thought of hypertension affecting the older adult in the way it can, especially an older adult with dementia.
The unit coordinator to continue to design assessments that encourage critical thinking and real-world application of clinical concepts, particularly in complex scenarios involving older adults with comorbidities such as dementia. Consider incorporating more case-based assessment to further enhance students’ understanding of the multifaceted impact of conditions like hypertension in older people.
