Overview
Justice professionals work frequently with legal institutions and this unit will introduce you to legal systems, procedures and principles. You will explore the way that the law operates in its social context and the impact that legal thought and problem solving methods have on the operation of the criminal justice system. Legal process and the methods of lawmaking will be illustrated through application on practice, rights and evidential requirements. Inter-disciplinary differences will be examined in order to support inter-agency cooperation and negotiation of conflicting concepts of justice. This unit also introduces the need for reflection on justice issues, through the use of a professional portfolio as a tool of career management.

There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Online Test
In this unit there are online quizzes which will be used to assess your ability to apply your knowledge to problem situations. These quizzes will be in multiple choice format but will require understanding of set readings and coursework AND the application of concepts to analytical and problem-solving situations (not just recalling facts).
There are three quizzes spaced throughout the term. Quiz 1 is a practice test (weighted 0%) and does not contribute to your final unit grade. Quiz 1 is purely formative and provides an example of what to expect in the other marked quizzes, and provides information to the unit coordinator on learner engagement.
Quizzes 2 and 3 are assessed items, weighted 15% each (to make a total of 30%).
Quizzes will provide feedback on your responses. They will each remain open for one week. Check Moodle for the precise dates for when the quizzes will open and close. You will need to complete a quiz in one 1 hour sitting (a 60 minute timer will start when you begin a quiz). Multiple attempts will not be available, so think carefully about when you will start the quiz in the available week.

2 Written Assessment
Word count: 2000 words (+/- 10%)
You will be presented with a problem-solving scenario involving the review of an administrative action (explored in module 7).
This assignment has four (4) components:
- Framing of the problem within the framework of the justice system including legal, social, and economic justice dimensions
- Strategic response to the problem
- Preparation of a merits review argument suitable for an administrative tribunal
- Reflection on the assignment

3 Learning logs / diaries / Journal / log books
Word count: 1800 words (+/- 10%)
You will submit a workbook containing reflective reports on learning activities. You are provided with a challenge task to complete each week for the workshop. The challenges are found in the weekly study guides. The challenge tasks make up the workbook assessment. There are ten (10) challenge tasks from which you will choose six (6) to submit for your workbook.
Workbooks must be written in complete sentences except where a table or bullet points are appropriate. Make sure you respond to the task and keep responses relevant and concise. Each challenge task will include a number of 'reflective seeds' that will give you options to frame your responses or you can use your own inspiration from the topics.
Referencing and citing is to be used. Referencing and citing format is APA 7 referencing. Your reference list (and title page) is not included in your word count, though citing is counted.
