Overview
Construction Measurement is the measurement and quantification for cost planning and documentation of building works and associated civil engineering works. In this unit, you will learn how to measure, quantify and cost construction work including civil engineering works associated with buildings. You will be referring to Australian Standard Method of Measurement (ASMM) of Building Works as a uniform basis for the measurement of building works. With the comprehensive knowledge of measurement, you will then gain in-depth knowledge of unit rate estimating and project pricing associated with the acquisition of materials and labour on building and construction sites. Having fundamental knowledge, you will then be directed to software to perform 2D and 3D electronic measurement and estimating associated with Computer Aided Design (CAD). You will be introduced to architectural and project coordination software to signify the integral part of cost planning in a construction project.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Prerequisite: Construction Technology
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. See details in the Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework).
Offerings For Term 1 - 2027
Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from Student Feedback
Students valued the unit's practical, project-based structure and suggested that exposure to real construction projects would further deepen their understanding. In particular, students identified site visits as a useful opportunity to see how construction measurement concepts are applied in practice and to strengthen the connection between classroom learning and industry activities.
Where feasible, incorporate one or more site visits or virtual site-based activities related to construction measurement. These activities could be linked directly to the unit project and assessment tasks, allowing students to observe construction elements, drawings, quantities, and measurement practices in a real-world context.
Feedback from Student Feedback
While students generally found the explanations clear and appreciated the approachable teaching style, some students requested greater access to technical resources and more detailed discussions beyond the core presentation material. Students particularly valued the terminology explanations and the use of simple language to make concepts easier to understand.
Enhance the existing learning materials by incorporating additional technical resources, worked examples, industry references, and more detailed explanations of key concepts. Classes can also include more discussion of how to apply these concepts to construction projects, while maintaining the clear, accessible approach that students have responded positively to.
Feedback from Student Feedback
Students appreciated the unit's clear, accessible delivery, while some indicated that more class time would help with more detailed explanations of practical construction measurement concepts. In particular, students requested further explanation of construction drawings, on-site terminology, quantity measurement terms, and practical aspects of measurement used in areas such as roofing calculations.
Provide additional explanations and worked examples focusing on on-site terminology and practical construction measurement processes. Introduce key terms and measurement concepts alongside relevant drawings, practical examples, and worked calculations to help students become familiar with industry terminology and apply measurement concepts more confidently in practical situations.
