Overview
This unit will provide you with the opportunity to showcase your knowledge and analytical skills through a research project on an approved authentic aviation-related topic. You will identify and negotiate appropriate research questions and project objectives, develop a project proposal, conduct a comprehensive literature review, and choose an appropriate methodology to be used for critical analysis, all in a team environment. You will generate solutions to the research questions, and present findings of the analysis in a research report and a formal group presentation to project supervisors and peers. You will defend your project by answering questions raised during the formal presentation. To achieve this, you and your team will work with a designated academic supervisor.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Overview
Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Research Proposal
This assessment requires the completion of a research proposal for the capstone project. The proposal should explain the nature and scope of the planned research. The main sections should be covered in the proposal include project aim and objectives, a brief literature review, research gaps and questions, research approach/ methodology, research timetable, expected research outcomes, and a references list. The word limit is 1000 – 1500 words, including figures and tables but excluding the abstract, table of contents, and reference list.
You may use Al for planning, idea development, and research. Your final submission should show how you have developed and refined these ideas.
Week 3 Friday (1 Aug 2025) 11:59 pm AEST
The proposal must be clearly written in a well-structured way. The use of standard templet is recommended, and all essential parts must be included. Points will be deducted for not correctly following APA guidelines, the inappropriate use of AI tools, and high Turnitin similarity scores that indicate improper paraphrasing (such as copied sentences or sentences with just one word changed). Besides, failure to use academic writing will also cause point reduction. Checking the rubric carefully before starting your assessment.
- Identify and formulate appropriate research questions and project objectives for an authentic aviation problem in a team environment
- Critically review the literature to generate research gaps and research rationale
2 Report
This assessment requires the completion of a comprehensive research paper. The research paper should include accomplishing the specific tasks set out for the project. The main sections should be covered in the research paper include detailed research background, project aim and objectives, detailed literature review, research gaps and questions, detailed research methodology, results, findings and discussions, conclusions, future work, and references list. Appropriate tables and figures can be added to support the content. The page limit is no more than 40 pages of single spaced 12-point font, including cover page, table of contents, abstract, figures and tables, appendix, and reference list.
You must not use Al at any point during the assessment. You must demonstrate your core skills and knowledge.
Week 11 Monday (29 Sept 2025) 11:59 pm AEST
The use of standard templet is recommended, and all essential parts must be included. You should also check the specific requirements with your supervisor. Points will be taken for not correctly following the APA guidelines, the inappropriate use of AI tools, and high Turnitin similarity scores that clearly show text not properly paraphrased, such as sentences copied or with a word inserted to break up the sentence. Besides, failure to use academic writing will also cause point reduction. Failure to clearly address all the research questions and missing important parts will result in point reduction. Checking the rubric carefully before starting your assessment.
- Identify and formulate appropriate research questions and project objectives for an authentic aviation problem in a team environment
- Critically review the literature to generate research gaps and research rationale
- Develop and justify methodologies appropriate to the research topic
- Present and defend research findings in a professional manner as a member of a team using oral and written formats.
3 Presentation
This assessment is a final presentation based on the research paper. It will be conducted either online or in person during the lecture in week 12. Presentation slides (less than 20 pages) are required to support the presentation. In-text citations and reference list are not required in the slides. The final presentation will be 15 minutes plus a 5-minute Q&A session.
You may use Al for planning, idea development, and research. Your final submission should show how you have developed and refined these ideas.
This assessment is exempted from the 72-hour submission grace period and must be completed by the stated submission date/time.
Week 12 Monday (6 Oct 2025) 11:45 pm AEST
During class
Points will be deducted for not presenting. Points will also be lost for directly reading from the research paper, lacking interaction and eye contact with the audience, placing full sentences and paragraphs on the slides, and exceeding the presentation time. Checking the rubric carefully before starting your assessment.
- Present and defend research findings in a professional manner as a member of a team using oral and written formats.
As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
