Overview
Mastering Debates in the Discipline is the second of the two coursework units in the Master of Arts (MA) course. The two coursework units provide discipline-context research training for the two subsequent dissertation units. You will acquire advanced research skills in your chosen discipline. You will engage with the trends, debates, and gaps in the literature relevant to a specific humanities or arts discipline. The assessment and output from this unit will vary according to discipline – it might be a guided literature review, a guided reflection on artefact creation (to be accompanied by an exegesis later) or perhaps another discipline-specific document clarified by your supervisor.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 12-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

1 Written Assessment
Task:
- The research project supervisor will mentor the MA student on synthesising knowledge and the discipline-specific formation of a substantial written output: a literature review.
- In conjunction with the output from the Project Proposal unit, this unit scaffolds the two dissertation units that follow in the MA course.
Week 12 Friday (6 June 2025) 11:45 pm AEST
Exam Week Friday (20 June 2025)
- Introduction clearly introduces the proposed project and defined the purpose of the literature review (i.e., identifying gap in the literature or contextualising the study in theory or positioning the methodological choices made for the study).
- Introduction clearly defines the scope of the literature review. A clear description of the criteria used to select the literature (type of sources used, date range, inclusion and exclusion criteria).
- Introduction provided the analytical framework used to construct the literature review and outlined the structure of the body of the literature review.
- Literature review was divided into logical themes. Each theme highlighted a key aspect, for example, background studies or a major concept or influential studies or mainstream versus alternative viewpoints or agreements and disagreements.
- Used topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph that clearly identified the theme or aspect of the theme being discussed in that paragraph.
- Each theme concluded with a clear summary of the main arguments that were presented. Links were made to the proposed study.
- Demonstrated critical analysis of the references used in the literature review.
- Conclusion summed up the major contributions in the literature, in the context of the particular focus mentioned in the introduction. Provided a clear summary of the main agreements and disagreements in the literature, any gaps or areas for further research, identified the significance of the research topic in relation to the literature and linked the project to the literature.
- Correct style, format, and layout applicable to a literature review.
- Academic style, citations and reference list is consistent with stated referencing style.
- Well edited writing, correct spelling and grammar.
- Analyse advanced specialist knowledge for a selected discipline
- Evaluate discipline relevant problems and the critical debates surrounding them
2 Presentation
Task:
- The student will undertake a form of knowledge synthesis presentation as guided by their supervisor.
- In the humanities disciplines, this may take the form of a presentation associated with their project, complementing Assessment 1 in this unit.
- In the creative arts disciplines, this assessment will provide evidence of the early development of the creative artefact, which in the final form may be a music recital, portfolio of compositions/sound installation, a theatrical performance, creative writing work, film project, or some type of displayed creative artefact in visual arts or digital media.
- The final form of this portfolio assessment will be determined in conjunction with the project supervisor and the Unit Coordinator/Head of Course.
Week 12 Friday (6 June 2025) 11:45 pm AEST
Exam Week Friday (20 June 2025)
The assessment criteria for this unit will be tailored according to the discipline within which the student is studying.
For creative and performing arts disciplines, the assessment criteria may include:
- significant progression in the development of the creative artefact such as:
- preparation towards music recital, which may include public performance
- preparation of a portfolio of compositions/sound installation
- development of a theatrical performance, which may include public performance
- creative writing work
- development of a film project
- preparation towards a displayed creative artefact in visual arts or digital media.
In the humanities disciplines, this assessment, and the associated criteria, will be developed with the research supervisor and may include:
- The student engaged an audience with a degree of public speaking confidence commensurate with the level of study.
- The student engaged an audience with the norms of public dialogue expected with the Humanities discipline in which the research project fits.
- The student covered the highlights of the Literature Review
- Conclusion - summary of the main points and justified how the Literature Review supports the research problem.
The Head of Course will approve all marking rubrics in consultation with the research supervisor.
- Communicate knowledge synthesis according to a discipline-specific framework.
As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
