Overview
This introductory unit is designed to equip emerging Health professionals with essential research and study skills. In this unit you will identify the strengths and weaknesses of research designs and methodologies, and learn how to critically evaluate information from a variety of sources. You will also conduct a systematic information search of health-related literature, use bibliographic software and enhance your academic writing skills.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
There are no requisites for this unit.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. See details in the Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework).

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

This unit consists of lectorial videos, H5P activities and tutorials. Lectorials are a series of short pre-recorded videos that provide fundamental knowledge. H5P activities consist of various types of activities and are usually situated between lectorial videos, as they are designed to help reinforce your theoretical knowledge and understanding. Tutorials are designed to enable you to apply your theoretical understanding in a practical manner. It is expected that you work through all lectorials and H5P activities prior to attending your weekly tutorial.
IMPORTANT:
You can attend the weekly tutorials live either in-person (via the Rockhampton campus), or online (via Zoom) or if you are unable to attend the live tutorials, you can engage with the tutorial recording, which is uploaded to the ALLH11009 Moodle page within 2 working days. It is NOT a requirement of this unit that you attend the live weekly tutorials. However, it is strongly encouraged.
The weekly tutorials have been scheduled for a Wednesday afternoon from 1.00 pm - 3.00 pm AEST.

1 Online Quiz(zes)
For this task, you are required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of important content delivered throughout the term by completing two online content quizzes in the allocated timeframes, as detailed below:
- Quiz 1: This quiz will assess content covered during weeks 1 - 5: Due Week 6 Monday (15th April 2024) 9:00 am AEST
- Quiz 2: This quiz will assess content covered during weeks 6 - 9: Due Week 11 Monday (20th May 2024) 9:00 am AEST
Each quiz will open two (2) weeks prior to the due date, as listed above.
You should engage with ALL learning materials and resources, readily available via the ALLH11009 Research Methods for Health Professionals Moodle page.

You will receive an immediate mark upon the competition of each quiz. Further insight (e.g., which specific questions you got correct and incorrect) will be available once the quiz is closed for all students.
Students are required to answer 40 multiple-choice or true/false questions per quiz, and will be allocated 60 minutes to complete each quiz.
Total weighing of this task: 20% of overall grade
This assessment task has a combined (cumulative score from Quiz 1 and Quiz 2) minimum pass mark of 50%. Thus, you must pass this assessment task to be eligible to pass the unit.

2 Presentation
For this task, you are required to:
- Select an allied health research topic of interest
- Demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and ability to perform a variety of essential study skills, with an emphasis on searching for information, using EndNote (or another citation manager program if you’re already proficient with another) and referencing for assessments
- Deliver a 15-20 minute pre-recorded audiovisual presentation, in a tutorial format

For this task, you will be graded against the following criteria:
- Construct a detailed and replicable search strategy
- Conduct an information search using appropriate academic databases
- Export relevant literature into EndNote
- Use EndNote to insert references (in accordance with relevant APA/Vancouver referencing style) into a Word document to support academic writing
- Presentation skills
Total weighing of this task: 40% of overall grade
This assessment task has a minimum pass mark of 50%. Thus, you must pass this assessment task to be eligible to pass the unit.

3 Written Assessment
For this task, you are required to:
- Select an allied health research topic of interest (it can be the same allied health topic from your presentation assessment task)
- Demonstrate your ability to critically analyse research and draw evidence-informed conclusions
- Articulate your conclusions through a 1000 word perspective piece

- Ability to critically review literature and draw evidence-informed conclusions
- Use of high quality evidence to support perspective
- Skill in using academic conventions to deliver a clear and concise body of work that articulates perspective
- Appropriate referencing throughout, in accordance with relevant APA/Vancouver referencing requirements to support conclusions
Total weighing of this task: 40% of overall grade
This assessment task has a minimum pass mark of 50%. Thus, you must pass this assessment task to be eligible to pass the unit.
